Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign: which one is right for your business?

Klaviyo dominates ecommerce email. ActiveCampaign dominates automation for service businesses. They are both excellent platforms used for completely different jobs. The question is which job your business actually needs done.

01 · Quick Verdict

The 30-second answer.

Klaviyo if you sell products online. ActiveCampaign if you sell services, run a pipeline, or need a real CRM alongside your email.

Klaviyo is purpose-built for ecommerce. It connects natively to Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, pulling in order history, product data, and browsing behavior to power hyper-targeted flows. Abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back, and predictive churn sequences are all first-class features.

ActiveCampaign is built around behavioral automation and sales pipelines. It has a full CRM, lead scoring, deal tracking, and an automation builder that can branch on almost any condition. For coaches, consultants, agencies, B2B services, and anyone managing a sales process, it runs circles around Klaviyo.

02 · Klaviyo

Klaviyo: the ecommerce email standard.

Built by marketers who got tired of duct-taping store data to generic email tools.

Klaviyo launched in 2012 specifically to solve the problem every Shopify store had: their email platform had no idea what customers were buying, browsing, or abandoning. Klaviyo fixed that by building the store integration into the core product, not as an afterthought.

The free plan covers up to 500 active profiles and 500 email sends per month. Paid plans start at $30/month for up to 1,500 profiles. SMS is priced separately per message. Unlike contact-based platforms that bill you for every subscriber, Klaviyo bills based on active profiles: people who received an email in the last 30 days. Keep your list engaged (or suppressed), and your bill stays predictable.

Strength 01
Native store integration

Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce connect in minutes. Product browsing, cart adds, purchases, and refunds all flow into Klaviyo automatically and trigger your flows without any custom code.

Strength 02
Predictive analytics

Klaviyo predicts each customer's next order date, lifetime value, and churn risk using your actual purchase history. You can segment and target based on these predictions without building any models yourself.

Strength 03
SMS built in

Email and SMS in one platform, with shared subscriber profiles. A customer who abandons their cart can get an email at hour one and an SMS at hour three, all managed in the same flow builder.

Strength 04
Ecommerce segmentation

Segment by total spend, number of orders, product categories purchased, days since last order, predicted churn score, and more. The depth of purchase-based segmentation is unmatched in the market.

Where Klaviyo falls short:

  • No CRM or sales pipeline. Klaviyo has customer profiles but no deal stages, no task management, and no way to track a prospect through a sales process. For service businesses with a manual sales step, this is a dealbreaker.
  • Weak for service businesses. If you don't have a product catalog, Klaviyo loses most of its edge. The segmentation power disappears when there's no purchase data to segment on.
  • Pricing scales steeply with list size. At 50,000 active profiles, you're paying around $700/month for email alone. For high-volume senders with large lists, the cost adds up faster than some alternatives.
  • Learning curve for flows. The flow builder is powerful but not as intuitive as ActiveCampaign's. First-time users often spend 3 to 4 hours getting comfortable with the conditional split logic.

03 · ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign: automation for businesses that sell services.

The tool professionals use when they've outgrown every other email platform.

ActiveCampaign built its reputation on one thing: an automation builder that can do almost anything. Sequences that branch on behavior, wait for conditions, update CRM fields, notify your sales team, and adjust contact scores in real time. No other email platform in this price range comes close.

The Starter plan starts at $15/month for 1,000 contacts (email only). To unlock the full CRM with pipeline management, lead scoring, and advanced automations, you need the Plus plan at $49/month. For most service businesses comparing Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign, Plus is the right tier to evaluate.

Strength 01
Automation builder

Branching logic, goal steps, wait conditions, and triggers from email opens, link clicks, page visits, form fills, deal stage changes, or custom events. You can build workflows that would require a developer on any other platform.

Strength 02
CRM with deal pipelines

Full sales CRM built into the platform. Create deal stages, assign tasks to team members, set win probability, and trigger email automations when a deal moves from one stage to the next.

Strength 03
Lead scoring

Assign scores based on email opens, link clicks, page visits, and form fills. Contacts who hit a threshold get tagged "sales ready" and can trigger a CRM task automatically. Stop guessing who your warmest leads are.

Strength 04
Deliverability

Consistently ranks among the top three platforms for inbox placement rates. ActiveCampaign's infrastructure is taken seriously, and their team actively monitors sender reputation across their platform.

Where ActiveCampaign falls short:

  • No free plan. You pay from day one. The 14-day trial is useful but you can't evaluate complex automations in that window. Budget for at least one full month to properly test it.
  • Ecommerce is an add-on mindset, not a core feature. Deep Data integrations with Shopify and WooCommerce work, but require more configuration than Klaviyo, and the segmentation based on purchase data is less granular.
  • Interface feels dated. The automation builder is powerful but the overall UI hasn't kept pace with modern tools. Not a dealbreaker, but noticeable when you're in it every day.
  • SMS is limited. ActiveCampaign offers SMS in certain regions but it's not a first-class feature. For businesses that rely heavily on SMS, it's worth considering a dedicated tool or a platform like GoHighLevel that treats SMS as a core channel.

05 · The Decision

Which one do you actually need?

The honest recommendation, based on what your business sells and how it sells it.

Choose Klaviyo if...

Your revenue comes from product sales

  • You run a Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce store
  • Abandoned cart recovery is a meaningful revenue lever for you
  • You want to segment by lifetime value, purchase frequency, or predicted churn
  • SMS and email need to share the same contact timeline
  • You have a growing product catalog and want AI-powered recommendations in email
Ecommerce

Choose ActiveCampaign if...

You sell services, consulting, or manage a sales pipeline

  • You run a service business: agency, coaching, consulting, home services
  • You need a CRM and email marketing in one place without a separate subscription
  • Lead scoring matters because not every contact is sales-ready
  • You build complex nurture sequences that branch based on behavior
  • Your sales process has multiple stages and you need automation to move people through them
Service businesses

Choose Handled if...

You want the right platform set up and managed for you

  • You'd rather have someone else pick the right tool for your business type
  • You want your sequences built, tested, and running within a week
  • You've been paying for a platform you barely use and want to actually get ROI from it

Consider GoHighLevel if...

You need email, SMS, CRM, and automation in one monthly bill

  • You're a local service business or agency running multiple client accounts
  • You want to replace 4 to 5 subscriptions with one platform
  • You sell both products and services and neither Klaviyo nor ActiveCampaign is a perfect fit

06 · Hidden Costs

What neither pricing page tells you.

The fine print that changes your monthly bill.

Both platforms look reasonable on the pricing page. Here is what the pricing page does not emphasize:

  • Klaviyo SMS is priced separately from email. If you want to send both email and SMS, you pay two separate bills. An ecommerce store sending 10,000 SMS messages per month at roughly $0.01 per message adds $100 to your monthly cost on top of your email plan. Budget for this before you commit.
  • Klaviyo's "active profiles" model can surprise you. If you run a flash sale and email your entire suppressed list, those contacts become active profiles for 30 days. One campaign can temporarily push you into a higher billing tier. Set up suppression segments carefully before large sends.
  • ActiveCampaign's CRM is only on Plus and above. The Starter plan at $15/month is email marketing with basic automation. If you want deal pipelines and lead scoring, you need Plus at $49/month. Many people sign up for Starter and then hit the wall when they realize the CRM features they need aren't included.
  • Neither platform includes transactional email. Order confirmations, password resets, and receipts are transactional emails. Both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign focus on marketing email. You will need a separate transactional email service (Postmark, SendGrid, or the one built into your ecommerce platform) for those messages. This is a separate line item.
  • Migration time is real. Moving from one platform to another is not just an export and import. You will need to rebuild templates, re-verify your domain, re-warm your sending IP (give yourself 4 to 6 weeks), and rebuild any active flows from scratch. Factor this into your decision if you are switching mid-flight.
  • Both platforms charge for contacts you never email. On ActiveCampaign, unsubscribed contacts still count toward your contact limit unless you manually delete them. On Klaviyo, suppressed profiles do not count as active, but they still live in your database and affect certain plan limits. Clean your list every quarter.

07 · Real-World Use Cases

Two businesses, two right answers.

The right platform depends entirely on how your business makes money.

DTC skincare brand on Shopify

Klaviyo is the obvious choice

A direct-to-consumer skincare brand with 8,000 active customers runs Klaviyo. Their four core flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, 90-day win-back) generate 38% of total revenue with zero ongoing manual work. They use predictive churn scores to target at-risk customers with a "what did we miss?" email before they lapse. ActiveCampaign could handle the welcome and abandoned cart flow, but the purchase-based segmentation and predictive analytics would require external tools and custom integrations to replicate.

Klaviyo

B2B marketing agency

ActiveCampaign runs the whole pipeline

A 12-person marketing agency managing 30 active clients uses ActiveCampaign Plus as their sole email and CRM platform. New leads who fill out their contact form enter a 7-email nurture sequence. As leads engage (open emails, visit the pricing page, click case study links), their score increases. At a score of 40+, a CRM task is automatically assigned to a sales rep and the lead is moved to the "proposal ready" pipeline stage. Klaviyo has no pipeline, no deal stages, and no lead scoring. It would handle the nurture emails but miss everything that makes the process actually work.

ActiveCampaign

Home services company (HVAC + plumbing)

Neither is ideal: GoHighLevel wins here

A home services company with two crews and 1,400 past customers needs missed-call text-back, review request automation, seasonal maintenance reminders, and a simple contact record for each customer. Klaviyo is built for product ecommerce. ActiveCampaign can do some of this but the SMS is limited and the interface isn't designed for field service workflows. GoHighLevel at $97/month handles all of it in one tool. Sometimes the answer to Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign is: neither.

Is Klaviyo only for ecommerce?

Mostly, yes. Klaviyo is purpose-built around product data, order history, and store behavior. It works best when connected to a Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce store. Service businesses can use it, but they miss out on the core features that justify the price. If you don't sell physical products, ActiveCampaign or GoHighLevel will serve you better.

Is ActiveCampaign good for ecommerce?

It's capable but not optimized for it. ActiveCampaign has Shopify and WooCommerce integrations (called Deep Data), and you can build post-purchase flows and abandoned cart sequences. But Klaviyo's ecommerce features are more native and require less configuration. For pure ecommerce, Klaviyo wins. For a business that mixes products with services or consulting, ActiveCampaign is the more flexible choice.

Which has better segmentation?

Both are excellent, but in different ways. Klaviyo's segmentation is built around purchase behavior: last order date, lifetime value, product categories bought, predictive churn score. ActiveCampaign's segmentation is built around engagement and pipeline stage: lead score, tags, deal stage, pages visited. Pick based on what data you actually have and care about.

How does Klaviyo pricing work?

Klaviyo charges based on your active profile count (contacts who have been emailed in the last 30 days). At 500 profiles, the email plan is free. At 1,001 to 1,500, it's $30/month. At 5,001 to 10,000, you're around $150/month. SMS is an add-on billed per message. The pricing model rewards list hygiene: keep your active profile count tight and the platform stays affordable.

Can I run both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign at the same time?

Some businesses do, but it creates sync headaches and you end up paying for features you only half-use on each platform. A cleaner approach: use Klaviyo for all ecommerce email and SMS, and a separate tool (HubSpot, Pipedrive) for your sales CRM if you need one. Or consolidate everything into GoHighLevel, which handles both and costs less at scale.

Does Klaviyo have a CRM?

Not in the traditional sense. Klaviyo has a customer profile view with full purchase history, engagement data, and predictive analytics. But there are no sales pipelines, deal stages, or task management. It is a marketing platform, not a sales CRM. If your team needs to track deals through a pipeline, pair Klaviyo with HubSpot Free or a dedicated CRM.
